Ways to Improve Home Security
Thurman Homes aims to build our homes in areas where families feel safe and comfortable, but even still it is always wise to take precautions to protect your family and your property to the best of your ability. Here are some ways that you can improve your home security.
Use Smart Locks
One of the easiest upgrades you can make is with smart locks. Smart locks provide added security and convenience. They allow you to control and monitor your door locks remotely using a smartphone app. Some models also offer keyless entry codes. This allows you to give codes to children coming home from school or friends so that you can ditch the key under the welcome mat.
Outdoor Lighting
Adequate outdoor lighting can deter criminals by eliminating hiding spots. Install motion-activated lights around your property, especially near entryways and pathways. Having lighting directed at entryways can make it safer for those entering the home as well.
Reinforce the Garage
The garage is a common point of interest for intruders. Not only do garages house valuables like cars, they are also often an easy entry point into the main part of your home. That’s why securing your garage with a deadbolt on the entry door and adding a security system or motion sensor lighting can be incredibly smart.
Window Coverings
Don’t give nosey neighbors or potential criminals clear viewing access into your home. Use curtains, blinds, or frosted glass to obscure the view into your home, preventing potential burglars from seeing your valuables.
Get to Know Your Neighbors
One of the best things you can do to increase not only your home safety but community safety is to get to know your neighbors. Strong relationships with your neighbors can be a valuable asset for home security. They can help watch your property when you're not around, alert you to any suspicious activity around your home, and even bring in your mail so it doesn’t look like you aren’t home. And, of course, you can return the favor to them.
Remember, no security system is foolproof, but taking a combination of these measures can significantly improve your home security and provide peace of mind.
